Roster Updated to Round 11

The roster (game/duty/umpiring) , updated to Round 11 inclusive, is now available on the roster page.

As mentioned there, from round 12 onwards, teams will be split into 2 divisions – the top 6 and the bottom 6. Teams only play other teams in their own division for the remainder of the roster, which willbe provided closer to that date, when the top and bottom 6 have been determined. There will be the usual 3 divisions for the finals.

All Lobsters games this season are forfeits as well as training options. Contact Peter Gardiner if you would like an extra game and play as a fill-in one or more Lobster games. Only 1 umpire will generally be scheduled for these games.

About Water Basketball Tasmania
Water Basketball is a sport developed by The Hobart Aquatic Centre. It involves two teams of 6 players, who pass the ball down the pool to their goal end, which is a hoop similar to basketball. Each player wears flippers (and a cap to identify which team they are playing for). Goals are scored as two or three points depending how far from the goals you are.

Good points on both sides here. From my perspective two things swing my vote towards keeping the roster whole:

    – The split roster potentially reinforces the problem by not exposing the “learning” teams to experience that will help them continue to learn. This point is already made above I think.

    – It seems as though the gap in skill level has closed in more recent seasons. Also, the rules are now more conducive to smooth and enjoyable games even when there’s a skill imbalance between the teams.

So on balance I think I’d vote for keeping it whole. Although we should pay extra heed to the votes from the middle and bottom half of the roster, because they’re the ones most affected.

    Cheers all.

I am curios to know other peoples views on the two division split half way through the season. Personally I would prefer to meet all teams at least twice. The season started with a number of forfeits and the Lobsters are only a ghost team. I would like to see the middle ranks feeling like they are being fully challenged. Position 6 on the roster would be a pretty awful place to land. Position 7 would be a bit a a yawn.
    What do others think??

    • Thanks Alanna,

I’ll leave it to others to comment, but will just briefly explain the Board’s reasoning (not that it’s too late to change that last part of the season if enough people think we should) when we initially planned the season.

We received feedback from some people/teams who did not enjoy the games where the team experience/skill levels differed too much, ending up in big point gaps. Others countered that by saying that they enjoyed games against top teams so they would get challenged (like you said) and could improve.

We then decided during a board meeting to compromise and do both. Now all teams play each other once, and then after the split some potentially closer games.

At this point in time, as said if enough people feel a certain way we could still go either option, seeing we’ve got 8 more rounds. However, we could also just trial the setup as planned, and adjust for next season if needed.

In any case, we could do a poll through the website to see what people prefer.
