Thursday 13/12/12

Ducks Out of Water 53 def Frank & Beans 20
Ron 30, Rob 8

Brothers 58 def The Nuts 56 (with overtime; RT 50-50)
Susannah 20, Tony 30

Congratulations to Division Premiers Brothers (Div 1) and Ducks (Div 2), as well as to the winners of Individual Awards in the category Best & Fairest, Sam Tassell and Marcus Bucher and in the category Sportsmanship, Michelle Kern and Matt Wilson.

As part of the Svensen Cup Awards night, we used to show Best & Fairest results (as voted by umpires after each game) in a Brownlow-ish, per round sort of way. Since this tended to take a long time to do, as well as not having the right equipment at the Aquatic Centre (after moving there from the Woolstore), we’ve stopped that and have gone straight to the awards. With players still being interested in the overal results, as a compromise, the complete list (of those who received points) has now been published in the Stats section. At this stage, we’re not envisaging keeping a web-based history of this, but simply update the page with the latest results at the end of each regular season.

As also mentioned last night, thanks go out to all players for making this year another enjoyable water basketball year and especially to those helping their team out with Duty. A big thank you to all umpires, who make their time available to ensure games can be played as fairly as possible. Thanks to the board members as well, who keeps things running as smoothly as possible behind the scenes and last but not least, thanks to the Aquatic Centre for their continuing support of the water basketball program, through providing pool space, equipment and awards night contributions.

Next year we’ll start off dealing with some challenges (nothing new there :-)) in terms of numbers of teams, people leaving and new players joining and accommodating the new school term (4, so 3 breaks) structure. Although we may not be able to have breaks in the roster for all the school holidays, we’ll try and accommodate them as much as possible while still maintaining comprehensive seasons.

The idea is to start early February (most likely the 7th) and, similar to this year, run two regular seasons interspaced by a social competition. We’re aiming to finish around the 12th of December. Once team/player/umpire participation has been confirmed to a reasonable level, work on the roster will start with the aim to provide it on the website towards the end of January.

On behalf of the board, I wish everyone a great Christmas and happy New Year and hope to see you again in 2013!

About Water Basketball Tasmania
Water Basketball is a sport developed by The Hobart Aquatic Centre. It involves two teams of 6 players, who pass the ball down the pool to their goal end, which is a hoop similar to basketball. Each player wears flippers (and a cap to identify which team they are playing for). Goals are scored as two or three points depending how far from the goals you are.
