Rule Highlight of the Week

The Neutral Ball (S. 13) follows similar rules as a regular Free Throw, but there are some differences.

A Neutral Ball is awarded first to the team that won the toss and alternates throughout the game from there on. It is generally awarded in cases where:

  • the umpire is unable to clearly (enough) determine which team committed the foul (e.g. simultaneous possession of the ball or jointly tapping it over a sideline, etc.);
  • the players involved both commit the foul at the same time (within acceptable limits – e.g. if player A commits a minor foul while player B commits a gross misconduct foul, the umpires should interpret that particular event in accordance with the circumstances and within the context of the game);
  • when the ball is out of play but not not out of bounds (e.g. stuck between the ring and the backboard).

Finally, note that a player is not permitted to score a goal from a Neutral Throw. So you will always have to pass it to someone else first before a scoring attempt may be made, even if you swum away with it and ‘Play On!’ has been called.

About Water Basketball Tasmania
Water Basketball is a sport developed by The Hobart Aquatic Centre. It involves two teams of 6 players, who pass the ball down the pool to their goal end, which is a hoop similar to basketball. Each player wears flippers (and a cap to identify which team they are playing for). Goals are scored as two or three points depending how far from the goals you are.
