Weekly Rule Highlight

When doing the toss (if you can call it that when picking a hand) to determine who gets to start the game, the team that wins the toss usually chooses to start the game. However, not everyone knows that you do not have to start; you can choose a side to play from instead and have the other team start the game (see section 9.1 of the Regulations).

Since Water Basketball is an indoor game choosing a side is not often important. There have been times though, where the sunlight has been shining through the windows at the stands side and captains have chosen to start from the stands side, ensuring that they do not have to shoot against the sunlight.

Although not often done, the result of the toss must be recorded on the score sheet. This is particularly important to ensure that it is clear who has the first Neutral Ball. Note that the team that wins the toss gets the first neutral ball; so that means that even when that team chooses not to start the game, they will still get the first Neutral Ball.

About Water Basketball Tasmania
Water Basketball is a sport developed by The Hobart Aquatic Centre. It involves two teams of 6 players, who pass the ball down the pool to their goal end, which is a hoop similar to basketball. Each player wears flippers (and a cap to identify which team they are playing for). Goals are scored as two or three points depending how far from the goals you are.
