Congratulations to Division Premiers The Nuts (Div 1) and Brothers (Div 2)! It was a bit more of a quiet affair in the stands last night; perhaps too cold for people, or not having the awards night, but hopefully we can all come together for a big awards night out on the 3rd of December to celebrate the victories and individual awards of both seasons and for all teams to have a fun night out.

We don’t want to keep you in suspense regarding the Individual Awards, so congratulations to the following winners. In the category Best & Fairest Female, Ellie Bucher (Sharks) with 17 votes and Best & Fairest Male Sam Scandrett (Beached Az) with 19 votes. The complete Best & Fairest list (of those who received points) has now been updated in the Stats section for this season.

The Most Improved Player awards were awarded by the Board to Jemma Dazeley (The Nuts) and James Barnes (Sea Snakes) for having noticeably improved this season and having made valuable contributions to their respective teams. The achievements of this season’s 3 top scorers, Tony Edmondson (The Nuts) 315, Sam Scandrett (Beached Az) 262 and Ellie Bucher (Sharks) 198, should also be recognised.

The contributions of duty teams and umpires are appreciated as always as well as Andrew efforts in for providing us with game highlights on Facebook all season. We were fortunate again this season to have 8 (reasonably) solid teams with a thank you to all Captains for keeping their teams organised and engaged and the Board for their work behinds the scenes.

Peter Gardiner has resigned from the Board and will take a 6-12 month break from Water Basketball to focus on the various Schools Sports initiatives he’s involved in. On behalf of the Board and all players I’d like to thank him for all his work at Water Basketball throughout the years and wish him all the best in his other endeavours.

This brings the numbers down to 3, which are bring back up to 5 by welcoming Alison Scandrett and Tony Edmonson to the Board. The exact roles and responsibilities of each Board member will be published prior to next season. This will be the approach for the 2016-17 Financial Year and once Water Basketball has navigated the transition into its new Incorporated structure we will schedule its first Annual General Meeting to vote on and elect new Board members. Going forward this will be the new way of determining the Board composition.

As mentioned in last week’s post and the week before that, next season’s structure will stay the same and the cost per player will remain similar, so we hope to see you all back next season which, as detailed on the latest year planner, commences 28 July. Captains may be contacted in June to work out any further details and we aim to have the final arrangements on the website for you by early July, so we can confirm the necessary team commitments by mid-July at the latest.

To assist in planning, it would also be very useful if the Captains could indicate as early as possible whether their team will continue to play next year. Similarly, the sooner umpires can confirm with John whether they intend to continue umpiring next season the better. Closer to the start (22 July at the latest) Captains should submit their team sheets to me, so we can get the stats and scoresheets side of things organised.

New/interested players are encouraged to send us an email with your inquiry through our enquiry form. There will most likely be a Come & Try night on 21 July, which always proves valuable in getting a feel for what it’s like to play Water Basketball.

Thank you all for another great season 🙂

About Water Basketball Tasmania
Water Basketball is a sport developed by The Hobart Aquatic Centre. It involves two teams of 6 players, who pass the ball down the pool to their goal end, which is a hoop similar to basketball. Each player wears flippers (and a cap to identify which team they are playing for). Goals are scored as two or three points depending how far from the goals you are.
