Weekly Rule Highlight

As in previous seasons, fill-in scores for players registered with other teams (as well as those of non-registered players) count towards the team total during the first 3 rounds of every regular season (see Section 6 of the Regulations), which will give teams the opportunity to settle into the season. In addition, during the first 3 games of the season, there is no minimum of 4 own players requirement and the minimum of 4 players can be met through use of fill-ins from other teams.

Fill-in scores are, during the entire season, noted in the score sheet’s Fill-In section for the team and fill-in players are excluded from top-scoring and Best & Fairest stats for their fill-in game(s). Any players written into the scoresheet’s printed player list (which as mentioned above is incorrect) are considered fill-ins.

Round 4 onwards goals from fill-in players registered with another team do not count (and are not noted on the scoresheet). Scores from new (non-registered) players however continue to count and should still be noted in the Fill-In section of the scoresheet.

Once a player has played 3 games with any team, he/she must register for water basketball and nominate a specific team, as agreed with its captain. During the remainder of the season (after the first 3 games) the minimum of 4 own players or forfeit rule (see 3.5.4) applies.

2017-18 S1 Come & Try Night

We’re kicking off the new season again with a Come & Try night this Wednesday the 26th of July, at 7:30pm in the Dive Pool. To those new to the game, come and check it out and to existing players, bring your friends along :-). Remember, the season starts the following DAY on 27 July, so now’s the time to give it a go!

Pool entry is free; just mention at Reception that you’re there for the Water Basketball Come & Try night. We also have caps and limited fins available, but if you have your own (regular sized, not scuba) fins then we recommend you bring those.

If you’d like to print the below flyer (for yourself or to help out by giving it to friends, posting it at your work, etc.) then click on the pdf image below (Adobe Reader required).

2017-18 S1 Roster

The full roster, featuring the ‘samish’ 8 teams as last season, for the first season of the new 2017-18 financial year (26/7 – 30/11) has been published on the Roster page.

Umpiring has been scheduled for the first 3 rounds, in case there are any changes to the umpiring line-up and/or availability, and the rest will be added by end of week 2. Any questions or concerns regarding umpiring, please contact John asap.

As usual, the full (financial) year planner, which shows game & no game weeks, is available at the bottom of the Roster page as well.

If you haven’t already captains, please submit your updated team sheets to me by email no later than Wednesday 26 July. Just list the confirmed players for now and we can add further players when you submit your updated team sheet later on. Kyle and I will need to have an up-to-date view of confirmed (not potential) players and cap numbers, if you have your own caps, at the start of the competition. Don’t forget, players are only added to the printed score sheet after submitting an updated team sheet (not by writing them on the score sheet on the night).

Lastly, we strongly recommend that all players brush up on their understanding of the Regulations. Umpires still regularly have to explain simple things like how/where to take a free throw after a 3-in-the-2-meter area foul, even to experienced players, which is difficult to do shouting across the pool. Also, have a quick read of what’s expected of the Duty teams and how to complete the Score Sheet.

Have a great season everyone!

Dave

End of season and Come & Try

Our first end-of-year club dinner was a success last week, with a great turnout of 34 (which we’ll be aiming to increase further next year 🙂 ), a nice dinner, with some sponsored nibbles from the Ball & Chain, awards presentations and a chance to catch up with everyone and practice recognising each other out of the pool.

Water Basketball, as we play it in Tasmania, has been going for over 13 years, with many of its members from its start-up first 3-4 years still here. As the sport developed seasons varied from 2-4 per year, we ran Splashball for kids, played with up to 13 teams and 2 nights, ran a mixed social roster and settled into a steady competition of 8 teams and stabilised rules.

You may have already seen some photos posted on our Facebook page that gave you a clue, but it’s my pleasure to confirm the following individual awards.

  • Best & Fairest Female: Ellie Bucher (Sharks)/Jemma Dazeley (The Nuts, also top scorer) both with 17 votes.
  • Best & Fairest Male: Brett Ring (Clownfish) with 18 votes.
  • Most Improved Female: Nicki Fox (Ducks Out Of Water)
  • Most Improved Male: Pete Woolford (Sharks)

The full Best & Fairest votes list is updated for this past season.

Congratulations to all and thanks again to all volunteers (Captains, Duty Teams, Umpires, Board, Andrew for videos and Craig for basket maintenance) for your continued efforts in keeping Water Basketball afloat.

With all 8 teams confirmed to continue again next season, the fees for the next 2 seasons (2017-18 Financial Year) will be confirmed in the next week.

John will put the umpiring roster for the first 3 rounds together as well. So far it’s our understanding that all umpires continue, and that Rob from Pink Pirates has put his hand up to umpire as well. We may need one ot two more umpires to spread the efforts nicely, so we’ll be in touch with the relevant teams who have not yet provided umpires. Please get in touch with John ASAP re any changes or periods of unavailability.

Last but not least, we’ll again have a Come & Try night, which will this time be on the Wednesday the 26th of July at 7:30pm in the Dive Pool, preceding the start of the season on Thursday 27 July (full year planner). The Come & Try night will again be free entry for all, as sponsored by DKHAC. So, please join us and bring along interested friends & family! Limited fins available, so best bring your own.
