As previously mentioned, the awards for both this season and Season 2 of the 2017-18 financial year will be handed out during the Winter Water Basketball Dinner on the 16th of June 2018 (see the Water Basketball Planner for the full 2017-18 schedule).

However, we wouldn’t want keep you in the dark until then with regards to the achievements of this season. Congratulations to the Championship winners of Division 1, The Nuts and of Division 2, Beached Az! A big congratulations also to the winners of the Individual Awards, especially the recurring champs Brett and Jemma for keeping their standards high:

2017-18 Season 1:

  • Best & Fairest Female: Jemma Dazeley (The Nuts)
  • Best & Fairest Male: Brett Ring (Clownfish)
  • Most improved Female: Mikalah Swain (Sharks)
  • Most improved Male: Nat Jackson (The Nuts)

The complete Best & Fairest list (of those who received points) has now been updated in the Stats section for this season.

Jemma Dazeley just frog-leaped Tony Edmondson (both from The Nuts) during the last regular game of the season (312 over 287) for the number 1 spot on the top scorers ladder with Brett Ring (Clownfish) in third spot with 174 points.

As usual, I’d like to take a moment here to recognise the contributions of duty teams, captains, umpires and board members! Without everyone’s help and enthusiasm we wouldn’t be able to keep this competition running as smoothly as it has been. A small effort on everyone’s part constitutes a significant result for everyone to enjoy. As always Sylvie’s help with setting up equipment and duty and Andrew’s efforts in providing us with game highlights on Facebook are appreciated as well. We were fortunate again this season to have 8 (reasonably) solid teams, so a special thank you to all Captains for keeping their teams organised and engaged, particularly with the added membership fee collection effort, and the Board for their work behinds the scenes.

Speaking of the Board, Tony will be taking over the Chief Umpire responsibilities in the upcoming season. Thank you John, for all your work in that role. Not always noticed or thanked, but it’s the kind of volunteer effort that keeps this competition running.

We’ve noticed (as umpires on the board but also speaking with various players) that the consistency in relation to the interpretation of rules has dropped a bit over the last few seasons, leading to confusion and at times play that is too physical. So we’d like to meet with all umpires at the beginning of next season to make sure we’re all on the same page with regards to the regulations and the interpretation of the ambiguities of the game. However, while that effort will be made, please be reminded that even with paid professional umpires, who study the game and practice umpiring, games are never perfect for everyone involved. So we’ll always continue to rely on that understanding from players and their capacity to play the game fairly with a positive and respectful mindset towards other players.

After the Christmas break, we’ll kick the 2017-18 second season off with a Come & Try night on 1 February, followed by the first round on the 8th. For the full season’s schedule, as usual, check the Roster page.

To assist in planning, it would be very useful if the Captains could indicate as early as possible whether they continue as Captains and whether their team will need help with finding new players. Similarly, the sooner umpires can confirm with Tony whether they intend to continue umpiring next season the better. Captains will need to submit their team registration sheets by January 26th at the latest (start with confirmed players only; it’s easier to add than to remove when doing the Stats).

New/interested players are encouraged to attend the Come & Try night on 1 Feb and/or send us an email with your inquiry through our enquiry form. The usual notification and poster will make its way onto the website and into DKHAC in the lead up to the night as well.

Thank you all for another great season; hopefully you’ll have a great Christmas break and much health and happiness in 2018! 🙂

Dave
