REMINDER: No games during the next two weeks, as we break for Easter. The competition resumes with Round 8 on the 12th of April.

Weekly Rule Highlight

Some reminders of things that are still regularly forgotten and add extra work to the volunteers coordinating the scoresheets, results and stats:

  • All captains should make sure that any newly registered players are added onto the Team Registration Sheet and emailed to Kyle and Dave at least a day prior to game night.
  • Anyone who is not printed on the scoresheet (unless there was some miscommunication) is considered a Fill-In and should be written into the 2-line box below the team list, with header ‘List FILL-INS below’.
    • If the player is registered with another team, circle Y in front of the name. Scores won’t count from R4 onwards and B&F points are never awarded.
    • If the player is new and not registered with any team, circle N in front of the name. Scores count, but B&F points will not be awarded until the player registers with a team.
      • A player can play up to 3 games with the team before needing to register.
      • Ideally, a player should not be added onto the Team Sheet until you’re reasonably sure they can commit to the season.
  • Cap numbers should be checked and, if needed, updated on the scoresheet prior to game start. If the number is printed on the sheet and is no longer correct, this needs to be updated on the Team Sheet and submitted by the captain as mentioned above.
  • The Duty Team member competing the score sheet should tally all scores horizontally at the end of the game and write their name at the bottom of the completed scoresheet.

Weekly Rule Highlight

Section 15.3 basically deals with holding onto or leaning on the edges of the pool or baskets, which is not allowed, unless in the event of injury (including cramp) or illness.

15.3 To gain positional advantage by holding on to, resting or pushing off from the goal or their fixtures or by holding on to, resting or pushing off from the sides or ends of the pool during actual play except with the permission of the umpire.

15.3.1 The umpire may give permission for a player to hold onto the goal or sides of the pool in the event of injury or illness.

┬áIf you are injured or ill and can’t participate in play, it is recommended that you exit the pool in the quickest and easiest way. Note, that if you then return to play, you must do so in a considered manner without risk to others.

Officially, returning to the pool should only be done via the substitution area, but umpires do make an exception when someone has briefly left the pool to stretch out some cramp etc, and then returns to the water before play has returned to that area. It is risky, and therefore not acceptable, to re-enter the pool where there are other players and the game is in full progress.

Weekly Rule Highlight

Occasionally I’m asked whether it’s ok to pass the ball forward when starting the quarter. Whenever you have a question like that, please check the Regulations first. We also have a printed copy of the regulations on the table on game nights.

The short answer is yes, as long as the ball is passed from the centre point of the field (Section 9.6). Minor foul 15.1 might be confusing, but that merely states that you’re not allowed to advance past the centre line before the umpire has given the signal to start.

The person starting with the ball must be in the middle of the centre line and is not allowed to swim with the ball until it has been passed to another player. That can be in any direction after the umpires have started the game.

Weekly Rule Highlight

While not often called, minor foul 15.4 “To take or hold the entire ball under the water for more than 2 consecutive seconds.” is still something to be aware of. Quite often, players will briefly push the ball underwater in order to stabilise and/or push themselves up a bit just after obtaining possession. That’s fine and generally doesn’t take longer than a couple of seconds.

Similarly, rule 15.18 stipulates that a player can’t swim (interpreted as ‘be’; i.e. whether in motion or static) underwater for more than 2 consecutive seconds. This sometimes happens when players get tangled up or someone has to retrieve a fin, but very rarely with the intention to hide from other players.

An umpire is most likely to enforce these rules when the player gains an unfair advantage in the process.
