Dark Mofo: Landing

Dark Mofo organisers and artist Tanya Lee have asked me to help them communicate one of their events and encourage our players to participate. Please see below for details:

I’m getting in touch on behalf of Dark Mofo and artist Tanya Lee to let you know about a project called Landing that is coming up as part of the Festival that the Water Basketball might be interested in. We’d love to have you involved!

We are looking for swimmers to dive into the 50 metre pool at the Hobart Aquatic Centre to help us swim the distance between Australia and Manus Island in a continuous 24 hour relay. We need hundreds of swimmers to participate to make the project work!

The project is taking place from 6pm on Saturday 9 June- 6pm on Sunday 10 June and is free to participate.

The ladder and top scoring rankings have also been updated under Statistics and are now finalised for the season.

The Quarter Finals roster is now available on the Roster page, including Duty and Umpiring arrangements.

Lastly, the email regarding the Winter Water Basketball Dinner has gone out to all captains yesterday. See below for a summary, and please follow up with your captain if you haven’t yet received the more detailed email with RSVP and payment arrangements.

As has been indicated on the roster from the start of the season, this year’s Winter Water Basketball Dinner will be on Saturday the 16th of June.

We’d like this to be event for all players to participate in, so please help us make this event a success by getting as many of your team mates to come along as possible. Partners are invited as well.

  • The Dinner will be at 7:00pm on Saturday the 16th of June at the Ball & Chain’s upstairs function room.
  • The cost is $35 per head and the menu is a choice of:
    • Lamb shank – A favourite comfort food. A chunky shank served on potato mash enhanced with a tasty rosemary and red wine sauce.
    • Tasmanian Atlantic salmon – Chargrilled with hollandaise sauce.
    • 300g Rump steak – Many diners say this is the tastiest cut of all. It requires a little more work from the jaw because of its density but the flavour is well worth it. Topped with garlic and herb butter.
    • The vegetarian option is all you want from the salad bar for $15. If anyone wants this option then we suggest they just confirm their attendance via email and then pay on the night to keep it simple.
  • Drinks can be purchased separately at the upstairs bar.

Please transfer all payments by Friday the 8th of June into the Water Basketball Tasmania account (see your captain for details). We’re maintaining a RSVP list of everyone attending and who has paid. So, since there is only limited space in the transfer reference field, if you’re paying for a number of people please let Kyle and myself know the names via email.

We’ll accept cash if a bank transfer is problematic, but the bank transfer is preferred. If you have any questions, please check with your captain or get in touch with me asap. Hope you can all make it 🙂

Thank you all for making it another enjoyable season so far.

Weekly Rule Highlight

With the Finals rapidly approaching, a quick word on Fill-In arrangements during the Finals period of a season. During that time, teams may not use fill-ins from other teams or non-registered players and may not field additional male players from the same team should there be less than 3 females available. To play in the Finals, a player must be registered and have played with a team at least 3 games before he/she is allowed to play for that team in the Finals. Note, that if a forfeit occurred, all players registered at the time of that game will be considered as having played that game (3.4.1).

When a team has less than 6 players (registered with that team) available to play during Finals and the missing player(s) cannot play due to medical reasons (a medical certificate must be presented to a Board member before the game), replacement fill-in(s) may be used regardless of whether they have played the minimum of 3 games with that team (6.7.1).

These are the rules, but we always aim to be flexible when considering each team’s circumstances. Any proposed deviations from the above will need to be discussed with the opposing Captain and at least one Board member as early as possible before the game (e.g. via email days before). Should the opposing team not agree with the suggested changes, then that stands and should not be subject to further objections.

Weekly Rule Highlight

Highlighting a few aspects of Free Throws this week; a goal may be scored directly from a Free Throw (including Corner Throw-in). You are however, not allowed to score directly from a Neutral Ball (must pass first).

During a Free Throw (including the Restart Throw-in, which occurs after a score), opposing players within 2 meters may not contest the ball (i.e. defend).

In accordance with 14.7.1, players may be no closer than 1 meter from the player taking the free throw. However, this is not always enforced when it concerns space limitations in the 2 meter area and/or the shooter is clearly not hindered in his/her actions or there is advantage in being able to play on quickly. The main thing umpires look for is that you do not defend the free throw.

If the quarter ends before the Free Throw can be taken (for fouls and corners only), then the relevant player may still take the shot at goal. This is of course without further movement, e.g. if it concerns a Corner Throw-in then the shot needs to be taken from the corner.

Weekly Rule Highlight

As outlined in 14.7, whenever a player takes any kind of free throw (regular free throw, neutral ball, goal line throw in (after score), corner, side line (after ball goes out), penalty):

  1. NO opposing player within 2 metres of the player taking the Free Throw may contest (defend) the taking of the throw or obstruct mechanics of the throw in any way; and
  2. NO opposing player may be closer than 1 metre of the player taking the Free Throw.

The umpires may allow opposing players to be slightly within the 1-metre radius where practical, as long as the main aim of not interfering with the free throw is achieved.
