Weekly Rule Highlight

Any player entering the pool during game play must do so via the Substitution area at the centre line (s.5).

Entering the field of play in any other manner may result in a minor foul and turn over to be taken from the half-way line if the offending team is in possession of the ball at the time.

If the offending team is not in possession then the player must leave the field while play continues and the player must re-enter through the Substitution area. In this scenario, play will only be stopped by the umpire if the in-possession team suffers any disadvantage from the illegal entry, or if there is a potential risk of harm to any player.

Weekly Rule Highlight

As outlined in 14.7, whenever a player takes any kind of free throw (regular free throw, neutral ball, goal line throw in (after score), corner, side line (after ball goes out), penalty):

  1. no opposing player within 2 metres of the player taking the Free Throw may contest (defend) the taking of the throw or obstruct mechanics of the throw in any way; and
  2. no opposing player may be closer than 1 metre of the player taking the Free Throw.

The umpires may allow opposing players to be slightly within the 1-metre radius where practical, as long as the main aim of not interfering with the free throw is achieved.

2018-19 S1 Full Umpiring Roster

Please see the Roster page for the 2018-19 S1 full umpiring roster.

Tony has taken unavailability into account as much as possible, but please check your assigned games ahead of time to make sure you’ll be able to umpire.

In all my years at Water Basketball I don’t think I’ve ever seen a round where there were (only) 2 points difference in every game. Full moon?

The Umpiring roster will be published later this weekend. Thanks to the umpires and captains who attended last night’s Umpiring meeting. As a result a few changes will be made to the regulations, which will be drafted, reviewed and published in the next few weeks. You’ll be notified when they have been published and from which round they will take effect.

Weekly Rule Highlight

With the conclusion of Round 3, the relaxed rules around fill-ins return to normal again (see section 3 and 6 of the Regulations). So, to remind you; note that all fill-in names should be written into the specific section on the sheet and not directly below the registered players. A fill-in is someone who is not printed on the score sheet. Note to Captains; fill-ins written in the team section of the sheet are not considered as newly registered players until an updated Team Registration Sheet has been submitted.

During Round 4 and subsequent rounds each team must have a minimum of 4 of its own registered players (or forfeit the game – don’t forget you could still play a scratch match with whomever is there).

Scores from registered (with another team) players do not count at all Round 4 onward, so also not towards the total team score (and obviously not be eligible for B & F points for that game).

A non-registered fill-in can score and that score does count towards the team total score, but they will still not be attributed to the players top scoring rankings & not be eligible for B & F points until officially registered with a team (captain updates team sheet and submits with Kyle and Dave).

Duty teams please note that if a registered player scores as a fill-in during round 4 or a later round, and an umpire has not picked this up and signals the score, these scores should not be counted on the score sheet. If you are not sure whether a player is registered with a team or not, then ask the relevant captain and/or umpires ASAP (preferably before game start).

If confusing, please ask a board member or umpire before your game.

Reminder for Umpires and Captains: Umpiring meeting next week on 16 Aug at 6:30pm in the Dive Pool meeting room. The Regulations must be read prior to that meeting.

Weekly Rule Highlight

Only 2 players of each team are allowed to occupy any space within each 2 meter area (see 15.8 and 15.9 of the Regulations).

For full details on the rule, see a previous post, but to highlight the things to do when this foul is called in the offensive team’s favour:

  • The player with the ball at the time (or nearest if no possession) gets to take the free throw.
  • You must take the free throw either on the spot that player was on at the time of the foul call, OR, directly in front of the basket on the 2-meter line. It’s your choice and you should make your decision clear to players and umpires.
  • If you take the free throw in the 2-meter area (on the line is also considered in the 2-meter area), then only 1 other player from your team can be in the 2-meter area.
  • From the free throw spot (you may be called back if not on the designated spot), you may shoot, pass or swim.
    • If you swim, the umpires will call Play On and the defenders may resume defending.

Please remind your team mates of this process, since umpires keep having to explain the rule even to experienced players, and it can get confusing trying to shout a rule explanation over the water to people with ear guards on.

Umpiring Round 2

Hi all – just a quick note to let you know that some of our regular umpires are unavailable this week (round 2), so a few of the games will need to be umpired by single umpires. As always, we count upon each player’s understanding of limited visibility as well as their intent on making each game a positive experience for everyone involved.

On a related note, it would be much appreciated if the captains of teams that are providing no umpires or just 1 umpire, can try and find some suitably experienced candidates for the umpiring role (email to Tony and Dave). Ideally we’d like to be able to call upon 2 umpires from each team. The more umpires and better spread across teams we have, the more we can guarantee 2 umpires per game, as well as some breaks for the regular umpires.

Weekly Rule Highlight

As in previous seasons, fill-in scores for players registered with other teams (as well as those of non-registered players) count towards the team total during the first 3 rounds of every regular season (see Section 6 of the Regulations). The intention is to give teams the opportunity to settle in and get their line-up sorted out. In addition, during the first 3 rounds, there is no minimum of 4 own players requirement and the minimum of 4 players can be met through use of fill-ins from other teams.

Fill-in scores are, during the entire season, noted in the score sheet’s Fill-In section for the team and fill-in players are excluded from top-scoring and Best & Fairest stats for their fill-in game(s). Any players written into the scoresheet’s printed player list (which as mentioned above is incorrect) are considered fill-ins for stats purposes.

Round 4 onwards goals from fill-in players registered with another team do not count (and are not noted on the scoresheet). Scores from new (non-registered) players however continue to count and should still be noted in the Fill-In section of the scoresheet.

Once a player has played 3 games with any team, he/she must register for water basketball and nominate a specific team, as agreed with its captain. During the remainder of the season (after the first 3 games) the minimum of 4 own players or forfeit rule (see 3.5.4) applies.
