Please see this previous post for the final scores and awards for the 2017-18 Season 1.

The awards for both both seasons of the 2017-18 financial year were presented during the Winter Water Basketball dinner last Saturday. A big thank you to the 35 in attendance for making it another success.

With regards to the 2017-18 Season 2, congratulations to the Championship winners of Division 1, The Nuts and of Division 2, Sheep Stations. A big congratulations also to the winners of the Individual Awards:

2017-18 Season 2:

  • Best & Fairest Female: Nicki Fox (Ducks)
  • Best & Fairest Male: Tim Hynes (Beached Az)
  • Most improved Female: Julie Mc (Clownfish)
  • Most improved Male: Dylan graham (Sharks)

The complete Best & Fairest list (of those who received points) has now been updated in the Stats section for this season. With 286 points for the season, Jemma Dazeley once more bagged the top scorer spot, closely followed by Tony Edmondson with 275 and Cole Dabner in third with 215 points.

As usual, I’d like to take a moment here to recognise the contributions of duty teams, captains, umpires and board members! Without everyone’s help and enthusiasm we wouldn’t be able to keep this competition running as smoothly as it has been. A small effort on everyone’s part constitutes a significant result for everyone to enjoy. As always Sylvie’s help with setting up equipment continues to be appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚ . We were fortunate again this season to have 8 (reasonably) solid teams, so a special thank you to all Captains for keeping their teams organised and engaged, particularly with the added membership fee collection effort, and the Board for their work behinds the scenes.

The Incorporated Associationโ€™s Annual General Meeting is due and will be held prior to Round 1 of next season, which will be on the 26th of July, 6:30pm โ€“ 7:30pm in DKHAC meeting room 1 (Dive pool). All players are invited to attend. The agenda will be communicated to the captains via email closer to the meeting date. One of the items discussed will be Board membership. The current Board members have all confirmed they’re happy to continue in their current roles. However, if any player wishes to nominate themselves for a position on the board, the nomination should be submitted to me via email by Friday 20 July 5pm at the latest, so it can be voted upon (via email through captains) in the lead-up to, and confirmed in, the AGM.

We’ll kick the 2018-19 first season off with a Come & Try night on 19 July, followed by the first round on the 26th. For the full year’s schedule, as usual, check the Roster page.

It sounds like all teams are good to continue and have their captains in place. To assist in planning, it would be very useful if the Captains could indicate as early as possible whether their team will need help with finding new players, and if they do, please make sure to attend the Come & Try night. Similarly, the sooner umpires can confirm with Tony whether they intend to continue umpiring next season the better. Captains will need to submit their team registration sheets by Sunday the 22nd of July at the latest (start with confirmed players only; it’s easier to add than to remove when doing the Stats).

The fees for the 2018-19 financial year have been negotiated to remain the same as last year, which is great news, and the usual detailed information wil be emailed to the captains for distribution.

New/interested players are encouraged to attend the Come & Try night and/or send us an email with your enquiry through our enquiry form. The usual notification and poster will make its way onto the website and into DKHAC in the lead up to the night as well. Kyle has posted the event on our Facebook page, so you can share that on your timeline.

Thank you all for another great season; hope to see you all back in the pool in July. ๐Ÿ™‚

2017-18 S1 Come & Try

End of season and Come & Try

Our first end-of-year club dinner was a success last week, with a great turnout of 34 (which we’ll be aiming to increase further next year ๐Ÿ™‚ ), a nice dinner, with some sponsored nibbles from the Ball & Chain, awards presentations and a chance to catch up with everyone and practice recognising each other out of the pool.

Water Basketball, as we play it in Tasmania, has been going for over 13 years, with many of its members from its start-up first 3-4 years still here. As the sport developed seasons varied from 2-4 per year, we ran Splashball for kids, played with up to 13 teams and 2 nights, ran a mixed social roster and settled into a steady competition of 8 teams and stabilised rules.

You may have already seen some photos posted on our Facebook page that gave you a clue, but it’s my pleasure to confirm the following individual awards.

  • Best & Fairest Female: Ellie Bucher (Sharks)/Jemma Dazeley (The Nuts, also top scorer) both with 17 votes.
  • Best & Fairest Male: Brett Ring (Clownfish) with 18 votes.
  • Most Improved Female: Nicki Fox (Ducks Out Of Water)
  • Most Improved Male: Pete Woolford (Sharks)

The full Best & Fairest votes list is updated for this past season.

Congratulations to all and thanks again to all volunteers (Captains, Duty Teams, Umpires, Board, Andrew for videos and Craig for basket maintenance) for your continued efforts in keeping Water Basketball afloat.

With all 8 teams confirmed to continue again next season, the fees for the next 2 seasons (2017-18 Financial Year) will be confirmed in the next week.

John will put the umpiring roster for the first 3 rounds together as well. So far it’s our understanding that all umpires continue, and that Rob from Pink Pirates has put his hand up to umpire as well. We may need one ot two more umpires to spread the efforts nicely, so we’ll be in touch with the relevant teams who have not yet provided umpires. Please get in touch with John ASAP re any changes or periods of unavailability.

Last but not least, we’ll again have a Come & Try night, which will this time be on the Wednesday the 26th of July at 7:30pm in the Dive Pool, preceding the start of the season on Thursday 27 July (full year planner). The Come & Try night will again be free entry for all, as sponsored by DKHAC. So, please join us and bring along interested friends & family! Limited fins available, so best bring your own.

2016-17 S2 Come & Try Night

We’re kicking off the new year again with a Come & Try night on the 2nd of February, at 7:30pm in the Dive Pool. To those new to the game, come and check it out and to existing players, bring your friends along :-). Remember, the season starts the following week on 9 February, so now’s the time to give it a go!

Pool entry is free, just mention at Reception that you’re there for the Water Basketball Come & Try night. We also have caps and fins available, but if you have your own (regular sized, not scuba) fins then we recommend you bring those.

2016-17 S1 End of Season

Thanks to those attending the BBQ last Saturday :-). It was nice to see that despite the busy time of the year a decent number of us had found the time to catch up with other team players, which included their children, the next generation of Water Basketball players.

In addition to recognising the Division winners, DKHAC free entry vouchers were presented to winners of individual awards:

2016 Season 1

  • Best & Fairest Female: Ellie Bucher 17 (Sharks)
  • Best & Fairest Male: Sam Scandrett 18 (Beached Az)
  • Most Improved Female: Jemma Dazeley (Nuts)
  • Most Improved Male: James Barnes (Sea Snakes)

2016-17 Season 1 (switch to financial year season naming)

  • Best & Fairest Female: Alyce Francis (Beached Az)
  • Best & Fairest Male: Cole Dabner (Ducks)
  • Most improved Female: Caitlin Barber (Sea Snakes)
  • Most improved Male: Chris Waugh (Pink Pirates)

Congratulations everyone; all well deserved! The complete Best & Fairest list (of those who received points) has now been updated in the Stats section for this season.

Tony Edmondson (The Nuts) maintained his traditional number 1 spot on the top scorers ladder this season with 282 points, closely followed by Jemma Dazeley (The Nuts) with 278 points and Markus Bucher (Sharks) with 227 points.

I’d like to take a moment here to recognise the contributions of duty teams, captains, umpires and board members! Without everyone’s help and enthusiasm we wouldn’t be able to keep this competition running as smoothly as it has been. A small effort on everyone’s part constitutes a significant result for everyone to enjoy. As always Andrew efforts in for providing us with game highlights on Facebook are appreciated as well. We were fortunate again this season to have 8 (reasonably) solid teams, so a special thank you to all Captains for keeping their teams organised and engaged, particularly with the added membership fee collection effort, and the Board for their work behinds the scenes in leading the competition through the recent organisational changes without really any noticeable negative impact to the game.

Since we now operate by financial year, which runs from 1/7-30/6, next season’s structure and cost will stay exactly the same. As per the Water Basketball Year Planner, we’ll start off with a (free) Come & Try night on 2 February and Round 1 on 9 February. The season will run as usual, with 14 regular rounds and 3 finals rounds, with the only break in the season for Easter. We’re scheduled to finish the season with the Grand Finals on 15 June, followed by our newly introduced mid-year Water Basketball event on Saturday 17 June.

It will be a dinner for all teams in the function room of the Ball & Chain and is shaping up to be a great night out so please keep this night free in your calendars. All we need now is a catchy name, somewhat Dark MoFo-like. The WeeBees? The Water Ball? Send in your idea and I’ll put up a poll during next season so you can all vote for it. Based on the votes, the board will make a final decision, consider it to be our Boaty McBoatface disclaimer, and the winner takes home a, possibly framed, DKHAC free entry voucher.

To assist in planning, it would be very useful if the Captains could indicate as early as possible whether their team will continue to play next year (so we can determine whether the competition will remain financially viable). Similarly, the sooner umpires can confirm with John whether they intend to continue umpiring next season the better. Closer to the start (19 January at the latest) Captains should confirm their team’s ability to pay the current team registration fee of $960 (between about $7-$10 per player per game, depending on team numbers) submit their team sheets to me, so we can get the stats and scoresheets side of things organised.

New/interested players are encouraged to attend the Come & Try night on 2 Feb and/or send us an email with your inquiry through our enquiry form.

Thank you all for another great season; hopefully you’ll have a great Christmas break and much health and happiness for 2017! ๐Ÿ™‚

Dave
