During the meeting last night a question came up regarding what is expected of Duty teams. I’ve listed a link below to the page on this website that explains this, as well as some other useful links:

Weekly Rule Highlight

Whenever a player takes any kind of free throw (regular free throw, neutral ball, goal line throw in (after score), corner, side line (after ball goes out), penalty) no player within 2 metres of the player taking the Free Throw may contest (defend) the taking of the throw or obstruct mechanics of the throw in any way (14.7).

While defending players may be closer to the person taking the free throw when they don’t defend the throw, the player taking the free throw should be given sufficient space to take the free throw without interference.

Active defense of the player taking the free throw may only resume once the free throw has been taken or after the umpire has called ‘Play On’.

The ladder and top scoring rankings have also been updated under Statistics.

Firstly, as we get into the new season, a request for all our existing and experienced players: please be mindful of our new players and new(ish) teams. If they (apparently) don’t know a rule then explain it to them, give them some tips on the game and tactics, and give them a bit more room than you would normally give your opponent. It is important that we support our new players and beginning teams, particularly during their first season, to keep them engaged and improve as a team.

Secondly, an update on the changes resulting out of the switch to a 9-team roster. As a result of selecting option one, the Ducks, The Sisters, Sheep Stations, Brothers and The Krillers have 2 byes and Clownfish, Beached Az, Sharks and The Nuts have 1 bye. We’re trying to make this as fair as possible, by:

  • Evening out the number of duty sessions per team.
  • Trying to have teams play similarly ranked (last year’s final ladder) teams.
  • Spreading the fees out proportionally (2-bye teams pay slightly less than 1-bye teams).
  • Dealing with the difference of opportunity to win games due to the extra bye for the 2-bye teams. I.e. those teams have 1 less game from which they can score points for winning. We are currently (see ladder) using the approach that we used to take during seasons with byes, which is that every bye counts as a win (with 0 points for/against).  Happy to discuss any other suggestions during next week’s 14/2 captains and umpires meeting, so if you have any, please discuss with your captain beforehand.

Weekly Rule Highlight

As in previous seasons, fill-in scores for players registered with other teams (as well as those of non-registered players) count towards the team total during the first 3 rounds of every regular season (see Section 6 of the Regulations). The intention is to give teams the opportunity to settle in and get their line-up sorted out. In addition, during the first 3 rounds, there is no minimum of 4 own players requirement and the minimum of 4 players can be met through use of fill-ins from other teams.

Fill-in scores are, during the entire season, noted in the score sheet’s Fill-In section for the team and fill-in players are excluded from top-scoring and Best & Fairest stats for their fill-in game(s). Any players written into the scoresheet’s printed player list (which as mentioned above is incorrect) are considered fill-ins for stats purposes.

Round 4 onwards goals from fill-in players registered with another team do not count (and are not noted on the scoresheet’s team line-up). Scores from new (non-registered) players however continue to count and should still be noted in the Fill-In section of the scoresheet.

Once a player has played 3 games with any team, he/she must register for water basketball and nominate a specific team, as agreed with its captain. During the remainder of the season (after the first 3 games) the minimum of 4 own players or forfeit rule (see 3.5.4) applies.

Regulations Updated

A few changes to the Regulations were agreed during the recent Umpiring meeting of 16 Aug. The updated Regulations document has now been finalised and is available for downloading on the Regulations page.

The updated regulations will take effect as of September 6th/Round 6. All players, but captains and umpires in particular, please read ahead of this round and inform players.

Sections updated specifically:

12.5 & 13.2.2 – If the ball has crossed the goal/back line and the umpire is unable to determine which player touched the ball last, a Neutral Ball is awarded:

  • If the the Neutral Ball goes to the attacking team, the throw-in should be taken as a Corner Throw-in, in order to avoid unfair advantage.
    • Neutral ball rules still apply, so a pass must occur before a score can be made.
  • If the Neutral Ball is awarded to the defending team instead, the throw-in may be taken normally, from the spot the ball went out.

16.7 and most of 20 – The content of these sections has not intrinsically changed, but have been re-written to clarify the process. and available options. We expect you to re-familiarise yourself with these sections.

Beyond that, I’ve done some general tidying up, such as removal of references to THAC and other bits no longer accurate. E.g. 2 meter umpire calling the score, which is something we changed to the 3 meter umpire a long time ago and removal of the specific ‘Screening’ section, which we agreed a number of seasons ago is already adequately covered by the contact/barging fouls.

Reminder

A reminder for all teams this week, on how to complete scoresheets when on duty. Please make sure you read this and assist your team mates who don’t read this website. Completing the scoresheets correctly helps the volunteer stats people to correctly record your results and reduces the need for following up with captains and umpires to find out the actual results.

Please check the example scoresheet at the bottom of the Regulations page with guidelines on all its sections, as well as check the below frequent mistakes.

chicken

  • Points should be recorded in 2s and 3s; not by tallying |s. Or as Kyle likes to exclaim: “NO CHICKEN SCRATCHES!!”
  • Fill-ins should be entered in the fill-in section (2 lines only for each team, since a minimum of 4 own players is required to not forfeit).
  • The person completing the scoresheet should count the scores down during the game, but also after the game count the scores for each player across to the right, which provides the check that the final scores match the player’s scores.
  • The person completing the scoresheet should write his/her name at the bottom of the scoresheet, whcih we use if we need to follow up.

End of season and Come & Try

Our first end-of-year club dinner was a success last week, with a great turnout of 34 (which we’ll be aiming to increase further next year 🙂 ), a nice dinner, with some sponsored nibbles from the Ball & Chain, awards presentations and a chance to catch up with everyone and practice recognising each other out of the pool.

Water Basketball, as we play it in Tasmania, has been going for over 13 years, with many of its members from its start-up first 3-4 years still here. As the sport developed seasons varied from 2-4 per year, we ran Splashball for kids, played with up to 13 teams and 2 nights, ran a mixed social roster and settled into a steady competition of 8 teams and stabilised rules.

You may have already seen some photos posted on our Facebook page that gave you a clue, but it’s my pleasure to confirm the following individual awards.

  • Best & Fairest Female: Ellie Bucher (Sharks)/Jemma Dazeley (The Nuts, also top scorer) both with 17 votes.
  • Best & Fairest Male: Brett Ring (Clownfish) with 18 votes.
  • Most Improved Female: Nicki Fox (Ducks Out Of Water)
  • Most Improved Male: Pete Woolford (Sharks)

The full Best & Fairest votes list is updated for this past season.

Congratulations to all and thanks again to all volunteers (Captains, Duty Teams, Umpires, Board, Andrew for videos and Craig for basket maintenance) for your continued efforts in keeping Water Basketball afloat.

With all 8 teams confirmed to continue again next season, the fees for the next 2 seasons (2017-18 Financial Year) will be confirmed in the next week.

John will put the umpiring roster for the first 3 rounds together as well. So far it’s our understanding that all umpires continue, and that Rob from Pink Pirates has put his hand up to umpire as well. We may need one ot two more umpires to spread the efforts nicely, so we’ll be in touch with the relevant teams who have not yet provided umpires. Please get in touch with John ASAP re any changes or periods of unavailability.

Last but not least, we’ll again have a Come & Try night, which will this time be on the Wednesday the 26th of July at 7:30pm in the Dive Pool, preceding the start of the season on Thursday 27 July (full year planner). The Come & Try night will again be free entry for all, as sponsored by DKHAC. So, please join us and bring along interested friends & family! Limited fins available, so best bring your own.

Rule Highlight of the Week

Instead of discussing a rule this week, I would like to ask (remind) the captains to make sure you are familiar with the Regulations and explain them as much as possible to new players. It’s very difficult for umpires to try and explain rules from the sideline in a noisy pool to players with caps over their ears, which can cause delays and confusion.

Also, you should make sure that all team members, particularly new ones, know to check their name on the score sheet before the game, check/write the cap number and when on Duty, how to complete the score sheet and how to perform other Duty tasks.

Training Tonight

Hi all,

Just a quick note to say that the Dive Pool (only) is open tonight, during the regular hours of 7:45pm – 9:15pm, for those that would like to train (at own initiative, none formally provided), have a few shot and perhaps play a scratch match. Dave Griffiths should be there, who will have access to balls/caps/etc.

Have a great Easter,

Dave
